Who would do taxes for free? I walked right into the VITA site without a wait and the volunteer took my information and prepared my taxes. My friend was right, there was no charge!

The volunteer also gave me the name of a place to call to get help with a budget and gave me ideas on how to save part of my refund. I’ve been to VITA now for 5 years and each year I tell my family and friends about the service. I love VITA and it has helped me to budget, keep a savings account and now I qualify for my own home through Habitat for Humanity.

Nerissa Aquino: Recipient Turns Volunteer!

During a recent tax season Nerissa, a divorced mom with one child, noticed a sign for free tax service on her daily commute to work. So she stopped in and learned that she was eligible to receive free tax preparation assistance.

The free service helped Nerissa save hundreds of dollars in tax preparation fees, as well as discover that she also qualified for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Nerissa used the extra money wisely by paying off her credit card and closing the account, and invested the rest of the tax credit in a savings account. Nerissa says the experience has helped her better manage how she spends her money.
