VITA stands for Volunteer Income Tax
Assistance. It is a nationwide program started and
managed by the Internal Revenue Service to utilize
community partners and volunteers to provide free tax
preparation for low-income taxpayers.

Yes you CAN be a tax preparer

No accounting experience is required. The tax
software guides you every the step of the way, and the IRS
provides free training

Volunteers are protected under the Volunteer
Protection Act, which means no liability for volunteers.

The time commitment is up to you. Volunteer as
much or as little as you like.

Evening and daytime hours are available, so
you get to choose what works for you.

There are multiple locations to choose from.

Volunteering is an excellent way to network
with other like-minded individuals.

Tax preparation is a unique volunteer
opportunity and a great way to learn a new skill.
Training Requirements

For new volunteers, the training commitment is
usually about 16-20 hours.

Most VITA sites offer an orientation
information session held in late October.

Volunteers have a choice of certifying to a
variety of levels: Basic, Intermediate, Advance, and Military.
You must score 80% or above to pass (seriously, you can do
this).

Link and Learn software is available through
www.IRS.gov to review class
lecture, practice tests and final certification.

Typically, workshops are held throughout the
week and on Saturdays to accommodate busy schedules. Training
opportunities vary across the State. Call 2-1-1 to contact a
VITA site nearest to learn about volunteer and training
opportunities.
